Kind of a stretch, but the abbreviation for enterprise mobility management can be expressed mnemonically as EM2 (EM squared). Before you reach for the dictionary, mnemonically means that you can use one thing to help remember something else, as in HOMES to recall to the five Great Lakes, Huron, Ontario, etc. You’ll have to look up the other three; this piece is about mobile application development (MAD).
So how did we get to E=MC2 from EM2? The C2 part stands for cloud computing, and, relatively speaking, you simply cannot enter the world of enterprise mobility management without relying on the cloud. The cloud, of course, relies on web architecture, and -- here’s that word again -- mnemonically MAD = EM2.
So we've made a big leap from Einstein's theory to managing enterprise mobile applications. In one sense, however, the cloud is what helps you, your colleagues and the IT support staff to overcome the limits of hardware and infrastructure platforms.
We won't torture that time-space-mass metaphor further, but when you think about it, web application development is to enterprise mobility management as the miniature circuit board was to the growth of electronic devices. The cloud has not only extended the life of computer hardware, but it also allows everyone to use their own devices -- anytime, anywhere -- to do productive work, analysis and IT trouble shooting.
One Digital Journal piece introduces a report on Enterprise Mobility trends and strategy:
"Key factors driving enterprise mobility today include Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Mobile Device Management (MDM), and application management."
The new agility offered by mobile cloud computing comes with mixed blessings:
- BYOD means that more employees can use their own mobile and wireless devices at or away from their workstations. The key problem is security and protection of proprietary information.
- MDM is all about ensuring intelligent and knowledgeable oversight to overcome the security challenges of BYOD.
- Application management in a mobile environment has to focus on how (and whether) a particular enterprise app can run on devices that range from fully-capable desktops to small-screen smartphones.
The best thing about the cloud is that service hosts take the multiple burdens of troubleshooting, infrastructure maintenance and system isolation away from their client enterprises.
